When it comes to flaunting evening wear at a high profile awards show such as the Emmys, most male attendees tend to play it safe and go for the reliable fashion choices. The classic black tie get-ups are unquestionably stylish, but with everyone following the same style guides, it’s hard to stand out from the crowd.
And yet, on the red carpet of the 2018 Emmy Awards held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on September 17, some men managed to do just that. Here are our top picks.
1. Darren Criss
One way to set yourself apart from the black-and-white is to go all-black, which is what the former Glee star did. Decked out in a custom Emporio Armani black tux, woven with a chevron pattern teamed up with a black shirt, black bow-tie, black Louboutins and a stylish beard, Criss definitely made his mark on the red carpet. For those of you wishing he had gone for a splash of colour in his outfit, we’re sure the gold Emmy he took home for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series provided great contrast.
2. Gaten Matarazzo
Known for playing one of the kids on the immensely popular Stranger Things, 16-year-old Matarazzo nailed his red carpet look by going for a Dolce & Gabbana mustard yellow blazer paired with smart black trousers and a bow-tie. And just to keep the outfit from being too formal, he went for a pair of Converse sneakers to finish off the look.
3. Brian Tyree Henry
Nominated for the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, the Atlanta star was one of the few to stray from the black and white “uniform” by donning a bright custom jacket with black trousers, designed by Whitney Anne Adams and tailored by Daniel Weger. The highlight of the look, however, were the mirrored shades that really set the outfit apart.
4. Caleb McLaughlin
Just like Darren Criss went for the all-black look, McLaughlin too went for a single-colour theme by stepping out on the red carpet dressed in an all-white Louis Vuitton ensemble.
5. Donald Glover
The man who was nominated for four Emmys (for acting, writing and directing all in different shows) arrived in a custom Gucci suit with patent Jimmy Choo shoes to round off the look. Given that Glover didn’t have time for fittings because he’s currently on tour under his rap moniker Childish Gambino (seriously, is there anything the man can’t do?) it’s perhaps fitting that his suit had vaudevillian-themed pinstripes.
It’s definitely heartening to see that no matter what the occasion, there’ll always be actors giving us major style goals.
