While we make sure to have the right amount of salt in our food, are we really having the right one for our health and nutrition? MH, with the help of Dr Shalini Singhal, brings to you nutritional information about Himalayan Pink Salt and the reasons why it should be swapped with regular table salt.

How Both These Salts Are Produced?

Himalayan Pink Salt is found in the salt mines of Pakistan, approximately 300 kms from the Himalayas. The pale pink colour is derived from the iron oxide deposits in the mountains. In addition, the pink salt is used without going through the processing, in its purest form therefore it is rich in minerals and electrolytes.

Whereas, table salt that we consume on a daily basis is processed by manufactures before bringing it to our table. During its processing, various minerals such as potassium are flushed out of the salt. This is harmful as the combination of potassium and sodium in specific proportions help with the blood flow in our systems. According to a paper published in 1997 in the American Journal Of Clinical Nutrition, if the intake of sodium becomes high, it may lead to high blood pressure. Another study done in 2010 by the researchers at Department of Pharmacology and Chemical Injuries Research Centre, Iran proved that the bleaching of the salt can also add aluminium and ammonia to it which may lead to various neurodegenerative diseases such as alzheimer's.

Dr Singhal says, “As sodium intake needs to be within limits, pink salt or low sodium common salt might be the preferred salt for people prone to degenerative diseases like hypertension, diabetes, coronary heart disease, cancer, kidney disorders etc. Himalayan salt would provide all benefits which table salt would and in addition provide you with the goodness of many minerals.”

Benefits Of Himalayan Salt Over Table Salt

1. Electrolyte Balance

A research published in 2010 in the journal of Sensory Studies has shown that Himalayan Pink Salt contains all the 6 electrolytes that is calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, sodium, potassium and chloride. So, the electrolytes can be added to our systems naturally by using Himalayan pink salt in our diets. This is especially helpful during the time of dehydration.

2. Migraine Relief

The study also proved that the amount of magnesium present in the salt can help cure migraines and severe headaches. This makes the Himalayan Pink Salt the natural remedy for headaches. Also, the calcium present in it helps in relaxing the blood vessels, thus, improving the blood flow.

However, before you decide to empty your salt shakers, you need to read this! Dr Singhal says, “Pink salt is natural, purest form of salt without any refining or processing done on it. It has traces of numerous minerals. However, the percentage of these minerals is miniscule for making any difference and it is possible to get these from other dietary sources as well.”
