We once knew a bald guy who was a happy to brag that he could comb his hair with a washcloth. (There’s one perk!) But getting a great look doesn’t require much more effort than that, even if you have a full head of hair.
We asked Sabrina Michals—director of creative styling at Bumble and bumble—for her secrets on easily styling your hair like a pro. In fact, they’re the same secrets she recently used as the lead stylist for Todd Snyder’s show at New York Fashion Week: Men’s. And you won’t even need a comb or a brush. (Or a washcloth.)
“We used a process that can take as little as five minutes, and works anywhere from a night out to a wedding,” says Michals.
She notes that this style is ideal for average-bodied hair that’s at least three inches long and not extremely straight or curly.
Here’s how to get the perfect look—no grooming tools needed.
1. After a shower, towel dry your hair until it’s almost completely dry. Then apply a thickening hairspray—holding the can about 10 inches away from your head—while running your fingers through your hair so the product spreads on from root to tip.
2. Work about a nickel-sized amount of a styling cream into your hands and apply to your hair starting at the back.
Important Note: You should never apply product starting in the front, because that’s where your hair is finest. You’ll end up with a weighed-down, greasy look.
Control your sides with a dime-sized amount of gel and then let everything dry for about five minutes.
3. Finish the look with a dry spray, applied all over then break up the hair with your fingertips to add depth to your look.
If it starts to lose its shape during the course of the day, apply a dime-sized amount of grooming cream—as you did the first time—and you’re ready to go.
