The only thing that can make a great outfit look even better is well-groomed hair. No, we’re not talking about hair that’s perfectly styled. It’s the texture that makes one hell of a difference as well. Your diet, haircare routine, all add up and result in the way your hair look. And let’s be honest, it’s a great feeling to run your fingers through extremely smooth hair! So, if you’re looking for tips that can make your hair shinier and smoother, you’re at the right place.
We spoke to Mahika Yadav, Director, Oxford Cut The Man’s Salon to get expert tips on the subject. "Keeping yourself clean and tidy is an essential part of daily grooming. I feel that men should invest the time to keep themselves well maintained and groomed by going for a regular head massage and a haircut,” says Yadav. Read on for 7 expert-approved tips on how to get shiny, smooth hair.
1. Don’t Over Wash Your Hair
Pollution, stress and long hours of commute, all results in our hair looking dry and lifeless. It’s quite tempting to go in for a shower and wash your hair everyday before you hit the sack, isn’t it? However, any hair expert will advise you against it. According to Yadav, it’s best to wash your hair not more than 3 to 4 times a week. That’s enough to clean your hair.
2. Use Coconut Oil
We don’t want to sound like your momma but it’s true, coconut oil is great for your hair. Massage coconut oil on your scalp and keep it for half an hour (minimum) before washing it off. It works as a natural conditioner and will add an instant shine to your hair. “Men should apply coconut oil with a good head massage to aid blood circulation,” says Yadav.
3. Never Skip The Conditioner
No, using a conditioner is not something only women should do. After cleansing your hair with shampoo, it’s essential to apply conditioner on your hair and keep it for at least 2 minutes before washing it off. Shampoos can be slightly harsh on your hair and might wash off the essential oils along with the dirt. That’s when the conditioner steps in.
4. Avoid Using Cold Water
When you’re washing your hair, always use lukewarm water. Using cold water on your scalp closes the blood capillaries that carry essential nutrients to your scalp. At the same time, very hot water can make your hair frizzy and dry. So, stick to lukewarm water when you’re washing your hair.
5. Try Baking Soda
Mix baking soda with water. Starting with the roots, apply the mixture all the way till the ends of your hair. Let it sit for 3-4 minutes and then wash it off. Baking soda is a great way to reverse the damage that’s brought upon your hair with all the hairstyling products.
6. Go Easy With The Heat
When we use a hair dryer, we never really pay attention to the temperature. But it’s advised not to use your hair dryer on maximum heat and instead use it at very low heat. Ideally, you should just let your hair dry naturally.
7. Watch Your Diet
You are what you eat! So, unless your diet is rich in nutrients and natural oils, it won’t reflect on your hair. Maintain a balanced diet and include the right amount of protein in your diet as well.
“Men should definitely visit a good salon to get their hair spa done from time to time. They should consistently keep a check for signs of hair damage like hairfall and dandruff. Apply a good quality hair gel to set your hair and you are good to go," she adds.
